After breakfast at the hotel, we will start our way to Wadi Rum by 4x4 visiting the Desert Castles along the way.  We will explore three of the most impressive Umayyad Castles that were build between the 7th and 8th centuries.  It is unclear the exact purpose of these ancient structures, but it is suggested they might have been used for retreats for the nobles, roadside inns for weary traveler's along the trade routes or for defensive purposes.  Whatever their use, they are an impressive example of early Islamic architecture. Dinner and overnight camping in Wadi Rum.

  • Qaser Kharanah:  built in the form of a castle; experts maintain that it was a palace in disguise.
  • Qaser Amra:   built as a bathhose and its existence adds to the theory that these "Desert Castles" were built mainly for leisure and not as forts.
  • Qaser Al Azraq:  the copious springs in the oasis of Azraq made this for an attractive place for settlement.  It is build entirely from local basalt stones.

After breakfast at the hotel, start the tour of the legendary Rose Red city of Petra for a day of exploration. This city of the Nabataean's was built over 2,000 years ago and lays hidden in a huge rocky mountain accessed via a high and narrow gorge. With monumental facades and spectacular buildings sculpted out of solid rock, this breathtaking site has been described by UNESCO as "one of the most precious cultural properties of man's cultural heritage," and also one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.   Upon arrival at the Petra Visitor's Center, we will arrange a 2-3 hour guided tour with an English speaking site guide  to explore the main attractions of the lower part of the city starting from the main gate all the way through the kilometer-long Siq to visit the Treasury, Street of Facades, the Theatre, all the way down to the Nymphium and Qaser El- Bent.  The guided exploration of the site will take in many of the over 800 individual monuments including buildings, tombs, baths, funerary halls, temples, arched gateways, and colonnaded streets, that were carved from the kaleidoscopic sandstone.   Have lunch inside Petra at Al Basin Restaurant and then some free hours on your own  to explore such sites as the Monastery or the High Place of Sacrifice.  The Monastery can be reached after a steep climb of 800 steps.  This impressive structure is the largest of the rock-cut facades and so large that the door itself is bigger than a house.  The High Place of Sacrifice thought to be the holiest site of the Nabataean's and is one of the most thrilling walks in Petra. Climb up the steep steps of the ancient route with its wide views over the monuments of the Petra basin.  Pass beautifully carved tombs and monuments and marvel at the work involved in creating this ancient site.  In the afternoon, we will continue our offroading to Wadi Feynan. Dinner and overnight camping in Wadi Feynan.
