13D12N DANA TO PETRA TREKKING ADVENTURE WITH WADI RUM

Strap on your hiking boots to trek the epic Dana to Petra trail, recognized by National Geographic as one of the world's top 15 hikes.  This passage takes you on an exciting historical journey and a splendid trekking adventure following an ancient Bedouin migration route and interesting shepherds and hunters' trails to finally arrive in Petra through the back door!  Waves of rolling mountains drop dramatically from more than a mile high to well below sea level creating stunning vistas of rock and desert.  During the walk, observe the local Bedouin shepherds and their traditional way of life as the guide explains about the medicinal plants, animals and the first inhabitants of the area. Moses came this way, and many early Christians were martyred in the region's copper mines. After, continue on to Jordan's most beautiful wadi (canyon) – Wadi Rum, to test your desert trekking skills.  Explore one of Jordan's outdoor natural waterparks in Wadi Mujib and end the journey with some well-deserved pampering and indulgence on the shores of the Dead Sea!

Day 1:  Amman Airport - Madaba:

Our representative will meet you upon arrival at Amman Airport and assist with your visa to Jordan.  After, he will escort you to our driver to continue to Madaba (approximately 30 minutes away). Overnight at 3* hotel in Madaba.

Day 2:   Madaba – Mt. Nebo - Dana:

Breakfast at the hotel then explores the oldest preserved ancient mosaic map of the Holy Land dating back to the 6th century BC located within the Church of St. George and the extensive and beautiful mosaics adorning the floor inside the Church of the Apostles.  Explore over 20 churches, caves and baptismal pools dating back to the Roman and Byzantine periods. Continue to Mt. Nebo and retrace the steps of Moses and admire the spectacular view of the Promised Land just as he did over 2,000 years before. It is very easy to feel that you have arrived at someplace special.  On a clear day Jerusalem, Jericho, and the Dead Sea can be seen.  A memorial in Moses‟ honor can be found at the entrance to the early Byzantine Christian church where Moses is believed to have died.  Continue to one of Jordan‟s loveliest hideaways and its most impressive ecotourism project - the 15th century stone village of Dana.  Perched high on a cliff, this charming community offers spectacular views of Wadi Araba.  Stroll through the terraced gardens and after admiring the fine craftsmanship of the local art scene.  Dana is known for its handcrafted silver jewelry, dried fruit, olive oil soap, and leather tanning. Overnight in Dana at 3* hotel.

Day 3:   Dana – Wadi Feynan (7-8 hours; 18KM):

Breakfast at the hotel then starts the day trekking from Dana Nature Reserve, one of Jordan's loveliest conservation and wilderness areas, to Feynan Canyon.  This spectacular downhill trek winds through the sandstone gorge of Wadi Dana.  Along the way, you will likely encounter the local Bedouin herding their sheep and goats. Dinner and mobile camping in Wadi Feynan.

Day 4:  Wadi Feynan to Wadi Barwas (4-5 hours; 12KM; altitude:  mostly level):

Breakfast at the camp, then today we walk for 6 hours as we head across classic Hamada landscape - dry, rock-strewn desert with little sand. There are spectacular views of the mountain ranges to the east, with the expansive Wadi Arabia Desert out to the west. Mostly flat terrain, there are several small wadis that we must cross during this day trekking.  Dinner and mobile camping in Wadi Barwas.

Day 5:   Wadi Barwas – Ras El Feid   (700m (2300 ft) ascent, 250m (820 ft) descent):

After breakfast, we set off leaving the stony "Hamada" desert behind us.  We continue our trek and walk around the foot of the mountain to reach the trail head of an ancient Bedouin migration path that ascends steeply across rocks and small boulders through a twisty track rising high into the mountain. This section can be challenging and takes around 3 hours. The route offers stunning views westwards towards the fascinating Wadi Araba desert. We eventually reach the top of a high saddle which has some of the most beautiful scenery of the trek before descending following a small goat track to the river valley of Wadi Feid. Here we have a well-deserved opportunity to refresh and cool down in its cool water, a perfect place for lunch. We then continue our trek, walking upstream and maneuvering around a beautiful dense garden of oleander, willow, tamarisk, and reed. Beyond this, we walk along a dry river bed surrounded with colorful sandstone outcrops to reach our camping spot where our crew will be waiting for us with Bedouin tea and after a wash and rest, a Bedouin-style evening meal. Dinner and mobile camping in Ras el Feid.

Day 6:  Ras el Feid - Shkaret Msei'd (trekking 7-8 hours, 21KM)  170m (560 ft) ascent, 150m (490 ft) descent, 300m (985 ft) ascent:

With an early rise and breakfast, we continue our trek by retracing our path along the riverbed gradually climbing up the hills following ancient migration paths to uncover some of the most spectacular sceneries in Jordan!   This part of the route is quite challenging and includes some scrambling to overcome some of the larger obstacles. The route becomes less well-defined and we depend on our Bedouin guide for the best route skirting the Sharah Mountains. The trail continues along the Wadi floor and gently climbs up into the pale colored sandstone distinctive hill that offers incredible views across the surrounding landscapes of mountains and canyons.   We find shade here and rest for lunch before continuing our trek again with a descent, followed by a gentle uphill climb to reach a bare rock slab perfectly located to spend another magical night in the wild where we set up camp and enjoy the peaceful haven of the mountains scenery around us. Dinner and mobile camping in Shkaret Msei'd.

Day 7:  Shkaret Msei'd- Beida - Little Petra (trekking 7-8 hours, 17KM)  150m (500 ft) ascent, 250m (800 ft) descent:

Breakfast at the camp, then today the scenery changes dramatically as we leave the narrow wadis behind and come upon the wide open sandstone hills that have the feel of a moonscape. With smooth and soft rocks the terrain is much easier to negotiate, with wide tracks and walkways. We pass through Bedouin encampments before reaching another rocky area as we descend into Little Petra. With just a short walk, our route takes us to our campsite uniquely located and surrounded by amazing sandstone mountains.  Dinner and overnight at  a Bedouin Camp.

Day 8:  Little Petra – Monastery  (trekking: 5 to 6 hours to the Treasury in addition to 3 to 4 hours for sightseeing; 16KM;  110m (360 ft) ascent, 100m (330 ft) descent, 100m (330ft) ascent:

After breakfast at the camp, today, enter Petra in a way in which very few visitors have – through the secret entrance to the Monastery.  Start the trek on a trail which initially winds across open farmland.  For the first two hours of the trek the path contours around the mountain ridge with fantastic views to Wadi Araba desert.  Then the climb starts at the narrow route, open to sheer dropoffs, leads to perhaps Petra's most awe-inspiring monument, the Monastery. We will then walk down the well-worn Nabataean steps into the heart of Petra, where we will visit Facades Street, Urn Tomb, the Theatre, Colonnaded Street, Royal Tombs, and Qasr al Bent before having lunch near the amphitheater. We then exit Petra via the Dark Siq (a secondary Siq) to visit the High Place of Sacrifice before re-entering the site through the main Siq so you get to experience the most famous view of Petra, "Al Khaznah‟ or "The Treasury‟ as though you are entering for the first time. After enjoying the unparalleled beauty of Al Khaznah, we then exit Petra and head to a 3* hotel in Petra for overnight.
Please note that trekking through the Dark Siq is subject to weather conditions. If rain is forecast in the area, we will use an alternate route.

Day 9:  Petra to Wadi Rum (trekking: 3 hours):

Breakfast at the camp, then we leave Petra early for the scenic trip along the Kings Highway to Wadi Rum.  Imposing, towering rocks and crags “God‟s skyscrapers” rise up from the desert floor and the silence seems to thunder through the canyons. One can easily imagine that Lawrence of Arabia might come galloping around the next corner on his camel.  Here you will begin your tour at the Wadi Rum visitor's center and met your Bedouin hosts.  We will travel to Lawrence's Spring, the Al- Nfeshyiah inscriptions, Lawrence's House and the Burdah Rock Bridge where we will rest and have lunch. Following lunch, we will climb to the top of the Burdah Arch for spectacular views. This is a very safe climb which is not difficult but in several places, you will need to use your hands. There is a more difficult area as we approach the bridge, so to make sure of everyone's safety, we always have a rope. Then we will drive to Rumshines camp for the night to experience a true Wadi Rum sunset. Dinner and overnight in Wadi Rum at Rumshines Bedouin Camp

Day 10:  Trekking in Wadi Rum (trekking: 5-6 hours):

After breakfast, we will travel by 4x4to Jebel Al Hash, for a wonderful hike up this mountain, probably the most beautiful mountain in Wadi Rum to scramble on.  Because you arrive at the highest point (1700m above sea level), you will see all of the different colors that exist in Wadi Rum.  Jebel Al Hash is located in the Al Forah area, close to where the Jordanian border intersects the Saudi Arabian border. We will take you up the east side of the mountain (Um Snenah) Valley, and go through the valley to the top. Our descent follows a different route down the northwest side of the mountain (by Wadi Nuqra).  After the hike, we will have lunch and then travel to Wadi Nuqra, before returning to the camp for another stunning sunset and memorable Bedouin night. Dinner and overnight in Wadi Rum at Rumshines Bedouin Camp.

Day 11:  Trekking in Wadi Rum – Dead Sea  (trekking: 4 hours)
After breakfast, we will travel by 4x4 to Jebel Um Adami, which lies on the border between Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The intersection of the border cuts the mountain into two halves, but we are lucky to have the summit on our side. The summit, which is the highest point in Jordan, is a staggering 1800 m above sea level. We will approach the summit from the northeast side, and from there you will be able to see the amazing Saudi Arabian desert on the far horizon. Also on a clear day, the azure blue waters of the Red Sea (Aqaba) can be seen.  This hike lasts 4 hours, and we will have lunch here before returning to Rum Village.  We leave the beauty, colors, and scenery of Wadi Rum and travel to the Dead Sea for some much-deserved pampering and relaxation. This world's largest natural spa is one of the most unique spots on earth.   The water and mud here have been recognized for their healing properties since Biblical times.  Experience the strange sensation of floating effortlessly - its mystical waters contain so much salt and minerals, it is impossible to sink!  A truly unique experience for both body and soul. Overnight at the Dead Sea Spa Hotel 4*.

Day 12:  Dead Sea - Wadi Mujib Siq Trail - Dead Sea:

After breakfast at the hotel, this day will be filled with fun and adventure on the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib. This lowest nature reserve on the planet is surrounded by massive multi-layered rock walls.  Depending on seasonal rainfall levels, the gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming.  During your 3 to 4-hour hike, clamber up and over rocks against the river's current while holding on to the embedded rope for support. The water trail winds its way through a spectacular gorge ending at a large, rushing waterfall.  This is an ideal walk to take slowly and enjoy the cool water and shade, especially in the heat of the summer. After, return to the Dead Sea Spa Hotel 4* for overnight.
Please note that you must be 18 years or older and know how to swim to trek the Wadi Mujib Siq Trail. Also, this trail is seasonal, opening April 1st to October 31st.
